Untitled Painting – July 2023 – 16×20
Just trying to paint something larger than usual. I paint a lot of small studies, 8x10s or 9x12s, every week for practice. For this one, I did something different that always ends up making the final result turn out sort of…not as expected. For this one I did a detailed underpainting in burnt sienna. Every time I start out with a lot of detail, the painting seems to lack the spontaneous look I get when I paint quickly, from a very basic set of outlines/shapes. Huh! Gotta keep practicing.
Tomorrow (August 1st, 2023) is the approximate start of my fifth year oil painting and studying art! I don’t know the exact day but it was the first week of August 2019. I did fiddle around with art in 2017 and 2018 but I had no structure, or goal, for learning. August 25th, 2022 is the day I made my first Instagram post.
